Desert Tranquility and Southwestern Hospitality in Ajo, Arizona
The picturesque town of Ajo is situated in the
lush Sonoran Desert of southern Arizona. Noted for its spectacular desert vistas, diverse vegetation and wildlife, and mild climate, the area is ideal for those who are fleeing harsh winter weather or simply seeking a retreat from congested city life.
The Ajo area was one of the earliest copper mining regions in Arizona. The town flourished as a major copper producer under the leadership of the Phelps Dodge Corporation until the mine's closure in 1985. Since then, the town has rapidly become a refuge for winter visitors and outdoor enthusiasts.
A two hour drive from Phoenix and Tucson, the town is easily accessible via well maintained highways. Its close proximity to the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge offer visitors the opportunity to witness some of the most breathtaking scenery in the Southwest. A short drive south to the Mexican border brings the sights, sounds and traditions of
Old Mexico vividly to life. Other nearby attractions include Kitt Peak National Observatory and the Gulf of California.
The Guest House was originally built in 1925 by Phelps Dodge Corporation to accommodate visiting company officials. The Company spared no expense in furnishing and maintaining the stately guest quarters. After mining operations ceased in Ajo, the house was abandoned until 1988 when it was purchased by the Walker family, longtime Ajo residents. The property has been renovated, refurnished and opened to the public as The Guest House Inn, a Bed & Breakfast establishment.
The furnishings reflect the rich traditions found through out Arizona while emphasizing the peaceful and relaxing ambiance of southwestern living. The pride of the Inn is its stately dining room built by local craftsmen during the 1920's.
