Good Times Import Races, Sept. 1997

Disk space crunch forced me to delete files. 10-16-97

Goodtimes Motorsports Import Races on Sept 7, 1997 was held at the world class Pomona Raceway. Now this is a real NHRA track with all the support facilities. As far as drag racing goes, this facility is WAY better than LACR were the Battle of the Imports is held. And if you've ever gone to Carlsbad to drag, but not been to Pomona, you are in for sweet surprise. Carlsbad is a joke. Never again.

So I went looking for Hybrids, and fast cars and I wasn't disappointed. Interestingly, fewer and fewer guys are swapping B18s into 4G civics lately, and instead are going turbo. Perhaps they are finding it more cost effective to build the 1.6L block for turbo power than to deal with welding in motor mounts. I saw a lot of SOHC 1.6L turbos in both 4G and 5G civics. Most were happily in the 13s, which in the 90+ heat is pretty good.

Lots of slow cars and new guys too. At one point as the track was cooling down and the 16-17sec guys came around again, and 7 out of the first 9 guys broke out. Why? Because they weren't adjusting their dial in to the cooling track conditions. But there were a lot of skilled drivers too. Oh, and the volkswagen bugs were out in force. These guys are good racers and many bugs were in the 12-13sec range with a few in the 11s. They pretty much cleaned up, and when it seemed they had eliminated the last honda in the Pro class, I headed for the gates.

JG Turbo Prelude Powered Pro Honda 5G civic.
Best time was 10.76 @ 13x mph. It says Ron B. on the window, but I thought I saw Charles of Pit Crew driving it. Then again, maybe the guy I think is Charles, really is Ron.

Another JG Turbo. Full interior, 4dr, daily driven and driven to the races. 12.50s on the smaller slicks.

Turbo Civic with an integra LS motor. Thats the way to do it reliably and cost effectively.

Worst motor mount I've ever seen. Unwelded then slid over about two inches. Scaaaary.

The Iceman Leaf Sucker. That mesh is all the filter its got.

Tony Fuch (announcer pronounced it "fucks" to the delight of the crowd) VS the Skyline. Skyline won, but both had disappointing runs.
