"on the subject of the 96 and up civic conversions to the Integra GSR, i know for a fact that IPS engine development in Temple City has done two of them, one is a silver 96 hatchback and the other is a black one. IPS is the only shop that has done this conversion to my knowledge. I doubt that Speed trends has done it. I've heard that IPS is doing a 2.2 prelude Vtec into a 96 civic also. They also have a 96 Accord that has a prelude motor and turbocarged."
Wil Hon reports:
"... I did in fact locate a shop who claimed they have done the [GS-R motor into a '96 civic]
transplant. I spoke to Herman at Speed Trends in Glendora, CA back in
January. He told me he had just finished hooking up the motor in a '96 Civic
coupe. I'm not sure whether it is a DX or an EX. He quoted me a price of
approx. $4800 which includes all parts needed for the "normal" DOHC VTEC
transplant into a 5th gen Civic plus new engine mounts. "It turned out very
nice." is what he commented on the finished product. I have not spoke to him
since then and have no other info on how the car performed. You may have
heard of this news already. Although I still think it is something worth
sharing with you and others. "
" Regarding the 6th Generation Civic, I was told by some friends and a few local tuning shops that the B18C from the current Integra will not bolt straight into the '96 Civic. In Australia, there is the top model, Civic VTi-R with B16A 1.6 DOHC VTEC (118kw) engine. Similar to SiR in Japan. If you compare the B16A from this current EK4 Civic with the current Integra's B18C, you will notice that the mounting brackets are different. The EK4 Civic with B16A engine actually shares the same gearbox ratios with the Integra TYPE R.
I suggest that whoever wants to do a conversion for his/her 6th generation Civic, should go and find a 2nd hand "front cut" B16A engine from the '96 EK4 Civic (Japanese model). The conversion would be fairly straight forward (like the 5th generation Civic and 3rd generation Integra. Make sure you get all the necessary hardwares like the wiring looms, ECU, airflow meter, gearbox, etc. The latest spec B16A EK4 engine is much better than the old ones (although look alike externally). The new one has a better/smoother VTEC cut-in to high lobes and upgraded ECU although no power increase whatsoever.
For those who are serious in modifying their 6th gen Civic, my tips are to:-
1) get a front cut B16A from the EK4 Civic with all necessary stuffs.
2) you might also want to get the rear disc brake setup from the
Japanese specs Civics.
3) Once you have the B16A, you can then further upgrade it to B18c
Integra 1.8l specs or even Type R. Japanese companies like
Spoon Sports, Vision, Top Fuel, etc. have the B18C upgrade kit.
Happy Motoring"
